Five Ways to Improve Your Game in Football Manager

Five Ways to Improve Your Game in Football Manager

I’ve been playing this game steadily since CM 99/00 or so. In that time, I’ve accumulated a certain amount of understanding of the ways the game works, and that understanding has led to a core philosophy, as noted in my first article on this site, Players Are People Too. If you liked that, here are five ways to improve your game that I don’t see other people using very much.

Expected Assists (xA) and Received Passes in FM20

Expected Assists (xA) and Received Passes in FM20

Let me introduce you to the little brother of xG, Expected Assists (xG). Whereas xG tells you the likelihood of a goal being scored from a certain position Expected Assists tells you the likelihood of a goal being scored after receiving a pass. The two go hand in hand in real world football metrics, and there’s no reason why you can’t use them in FM20. We also add another metric to look at. There’s something to be learnt about where…

FM20 Welcome to Aswijan – Brand New Country, Whole New Challenge

Welcome to Aswijan FM20 Welcome to Aswijan – Brand New Country, Whole New Challenge. A completely fictional Football Manager custom database that leaves little too the imagination. Without further a do, I will pass this over to Laura who will tell you everything there is to know about Aswijan. I’m Laura, AKA Chilled Moose and I’m responsible for the creation of the Aswijan (pronounced ‘azwIjan or ‘Az-wee-jan’) database. To start, here is an outline of what this project contains. This…

Total Football Journeyman: How To Break Stubborn Defences

Total Football Journeyman: How To Break Stubborn Defences

I pick up where I left off last time. Searching for the central striker role to complete my 3-4-3 Diamond formation. For this I will take a step back and look at the original inspiration for Louis van Gaal’s 3-4-3 formation. That is, Johan Cruyff and the Barcelona team of late 1980s and early 1990s. Also I will take a somewhat unorthodox approach to constructing my 3-4-3 Diamond Tactic. We will deconstruct the attacking formation by looking at defensive positioning….

Taking on the World #5

Taking on the World #5

Welcome back to the Football Manager 2020 story Taking on the World. This FM20 story is a classic journeyman save as we attempt to travel around the world and ticking off as many countries as we can. The aim of this FM20 story is not to stay at the same club for more than one full season. I am not allowed to accept a job offer from another club in the same country if I am already managing a club…

Inter the Game

Inter the Game

Welcome back. If you missed part one, please click here. If you did not, please pass go and continue. Where did we leave it last time? The last update left Inter recently beaten in the first Milan derby of the season. A match that would draw a lot of character out of manager Gianni Rosabosa and his team. Unusually little changed going into the next match. Which would be the final match of the group stages of the UEFA Champions…

Unsung Heroes: Raumdeuter

Unsung Heroes: Raumdeuter

The Raumdeuter is perhaps one of the most peculiar roles in Football. Coined and created by Thomas Müller, we can not only consider him the first Raumdeuter, but potentially the only one. But what exactly is a Raumdeuter? Who comes close to being one? Raumdeuter: A History By the time he was 21, Thomas Müller had returned from a semi-successful World cup campaign which saw Germany take third place in 2010. He was already making headlines for his peculiar style…

Total Football Journeyman: Bossing the Ball like 1995 Ajax

Part 2 of Building a Total Football Club in FM20 It is not about how long you have the ball, it is what you do with it. When playing possession football, you should always have this mantra in mind. Although I am not one to obsess over getting high possession numbers. Of course it is always nice to see your team getting the higher possession %. I see it as proof that my players are imposing themselves on the opposition…

Dictate The Podcast – Quarantine Quiz Special

Dictate The Podcast – Quarantine Quiz Special

In today’s Dictate The Podcast we wanted to try something different and do a quiz. The reason behind this, many people are probably fed up with being stuck in doors, not being able to see their family and friends. We wanted to do something light hearted in an attempt to make you laugh. Putting this together was fun, but the real drive was to try and make something different from our usual style.

Getting the Best out of your Striker Player Traits

Getting the Best out of your Striker Player Traits

FM20 has a huge range of player traits to change, improve or occasionally disrupt your players behaviour on the pitch. In our last article we ran an experiment to see what impact ability had on certain striker traits like lobbing or rounding the keeper, and placing or powering in shots. It was a bit of a bust as we found that ability alone didn’t seem to have an effect. It was useful for partly busting myths about certain player traits…
