Wide players in FM19: How to harness them in your ball-hogging side

Unai Emery.png

Like watching your wingers bomb up and down the touchline, getting crosses in? Or your full-back beguiling the entire opposition, manoeuvring his way into the box unmarked? Well stop reading right here.

We’re looking for passing and moving, people. No player can move without passing first.

That’s how I developed this spectacular tactical system.

WBA tacticDid you think any of that was true? It couldn’t have been further. Continue reading

FM19 Guide: How to defend with a high line

Pirates.png

It looks like you’ve got enough men back. The next thing you know, someone ends up ghosting behind your flabbergasted defence. Your first instinct is to blame your players, but the game’s animation often makes players look slower, or less alert, than they actually are.

Your next instinct might be to change your centre-backs; either in personnel or roles.

Nothing wrong with this at all. That said, without suitable protection, isolated centre-backs in a high line will always end up focusing primarily on the space behind them. To stop your enemies playing any football, the centre-backs must focus on keeping their positions! Continue reading

Inverted Wing-Backs in FM19: How to Utilise Your Silent Assassins.

Manchester City.png

Inverted wing-backs: what’s the point?

Inverted wing-backs are often just seen as full-backs standing in central midfield. An excuse to pass sideways. An excuse to bring natural full-backs out of position. An excuse to play 20,000 bleeding passes for the sake of it!

However, believe it or not, using inverted wing-backs correctly can give your side an unrivalled attacking threat. If you’re still with me, I’ll try to explain how! Continue reading

La Grande INTER: Bringing Catenaccio to 2019

A Tactical Replication for Modern Football

Why does it seem like the Catenaccio preset in Football Manager 2019 doesn’t work? Or at least, certainly not work for a long term system. Well, it’s because the system itself no longer works in the modern football game. I’ve heard chatter that Sports Interactive didn’t replicate the system instructions the “right way” but I think they did… and that’s why it doesn’t work.

Dynamo Projekt FM19: Introducing the Deep Raumdeuter Role

Continuing with my series highlighting specialist roles in Football Manager, I now turn to a role that I often find misunderstood and misused. As enigmatic as the man who inspired it, the role of Raumdeuter will always be linked with the name of Thomas Muller. Every position has its ideal player, whether it is Pirlo the Regista, Roberto Baggio the Trequartista, or Beckenbauer the Libero, to the point where no modern player can truly call any role his own. None except Thomas Muller. Word “Raumdeuter” translates from German as “space investigator” and it is what Muller called himself when asked to describe his idiosyncratic style of play.  Just as left foot is key to Messi’s game, Muller thrives on the half space. I will be deconstructing what makes this role so unique and how it can be used to break down even the greatest defences. Also I will show how you can mould your player into a Raumdeuter to rival even Muller. I will tie all this into a tactic that takes advantage of my own variation of Deep Raumdeuter – MitteRaumdeuter.

Highlighting the Wide Target Man and the Flo Pass Tactic in FM19

Since it was first introduced in FM2014, the role of the Wide Target Man has always fascinated and brought out the tactical tinkerer in me, for better or worse. Sometimes I get an idea that takes over whichever save I’m doing, as I try hard to make it work. Most of the time it leads to a lot of wasted time playing around with the tactics screen and the later disappointment of watching game after game and seeing none of the results which I hoped for. My particular weakness has always been the exotic roles in football manager games. I created my share of Raumdeuter, Libero and Enganche tactics.  The Wide Target Man is no exception. While my previous exotic experiments led to inconsistent results at best, given all that I have seen from current Football Manager match engine and the revamped tactical interface, I have high hopes that the “Big man” on the wing role is at its best since 2014. Given the right player it could be just be missing ingredient to bring life back to the fallen giant or to build a tactical system to directly counter the high pressing and possession-heavy trend in football today.
