Overview of Player
Name: Son Heung-min
Position : Winger/Forward
Nationality: South Korean
World cup influence: 6/10
Overview of Nation
Korea Republic qualified for the World Cup with ease, they won their group unbeaten (however the Kuwait game, they were rewarded a 3-0 because of Kuwait breaking FIFA rules) including an 8-0 demolishing of Laos and finished top of the table. Unfortunately for Korea, they’ve performed poorly the last three World Cups and while they have an extremely tough group with Germany, Sweden and Mexico surely they’ll do better this time!
Performance of Player in Qualification
Son played in the majority of the World Cup qualifying matches for South Korea, he’s an important player for Korea, so much so he was exempt from military service so he could play for the national team. He got a hat-trick vs Laos during the qualifying match for the World Cup. Son has also had another quality season at Tottenham, scoring 12 goals for the North London side and is now an important player for Tottenham, especially with how well he links up with Harry Kane.
Son has many strengths including the fact he’s good with both feet with the ball as well as being able to play in several positions attacking wise, he can play as a second striker, attacking midfielder or as a winger. However, he isn’t strong physically or in the air either and he’s not a particularly good crosser of the ball.
Why he’s one to watch
He’s been amazing for Tottenham and is for me very underrated compared to the likes of Kane, Alli and Dier who take a lot of the limelight. He’s easily South Korea’s best player and while some of the opposition he’s facing seems daunting, he’s played against some of the world’s best players this season and come out on top mostly (one stand out game for me was against Madrid, Son and Spurs ran rings round the likes of Ronaldo). He’s incredibly versatile and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him score a brace or two this tournament.
He’s also got a fantastic attitude as well, happy to play anywhere attacking wise and rather than move away from Spurs to find first team football, he knuckled down and earned his way into the first team and has been in the starting 11 ever since unless through injury or suspension.

Football Manager Attributes
Son’s stats on FM are very impressive, with his finishing at a 16, technique at 15 and dribbling at 14 it’s no wonder why Tottenham value him so highly, and I’m quite surprised a bigger team hasn’t thought of purchasing him, while he’s got his weaknesses I do think he’s a player that deserves silverware.
