Overview of Player
Name: Ramadan Sobhi
Position: Attacking Midfielder/ Winger
Current Club: Huddersfield FC (recently moved from Stoke)
International Caps: 19 (1)
Ramadan Sobhi is a growing name among football fans with a spell at Stoke turning into a £5.7m transfer to Premier league side Huddersfield. The play maker is unlikely to change clubs again this season but with a strong world cup and a good season at his new club I could see a big team taking a gamble with him. He played 24 times last season for Stoke scoring 2 however stoke were relegated from the league.
Overview of Nation
After finishing runners up of the African Cup of Nations in 2017, Egypt are arguably the strongest side in Africa right now. They breezed through their group consisting of Uganda, Ghana and Congo to qualify for the competition and are in Group A alongside Russia, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay. Mo Salah’s recent success will boost the squad and hopefully spread to the other players. A lot of the focus in on Salah but I’m hoping that Sobhi will shine as a result.
Egypt are currently 45th in the World Rankings, and have little to prove at this competition as nobody expects them to do particularly well. With the lack of pressure hopefully the team can play some good football!
Performance in Qualifying
Sobhi played in every game of qualifying, either from the bench or as a starter. Whilst Salah stole the spotlight in goals, Sobhi played very well and contributed with a few assists. Due to Sobhi’s age and lack of experience he started mainly from the bench but his stature in the game will grow with experience.
Why He Is One To Watch
His style of play, which combines dribbling, clinical passing, vision, and an eye for goal made him dubbed on several occasions as the new Mohamed Aboutrika, who is widely considered to be one of Egypt’s greatest footballers. He has confidence in his own ability and will shine on the main stage.
Here he is with a bit of skill against none other than Manchester City! Definitely worth keeping tabs on over the next few years. He is only 21!
Video of player/compilation
Here is a video of Sobhi’s ability, and this might explain why I think he is one to watch.
Here are his stats in game in 2022, he signed for Shalke in 2021 for a £14.75m and looks every penny of it based on his in game value. He seems very versatile and can play anywhere across the front or in midfield.
