Overview of Player
Name: Gonçalo Guedes
Position : Winger
Current Club: Paris Saint-Germain F.C. (On loan at Valencia)
International Caps: 10 (3)
Gonçalo Guedes is a well known name among football manager fans, with the Portuguese winger playing for Benfica until a £30 million move to PSG in January 2017. Due to PSG’s huge financial fair play issues. It is likely that Gonçalo Guedes will be sold in the near future and if he has an incredible World Cup we all know how his price will rocket. *cough* James Rodríguez *cough*
Overview of Nation
After their success at the European Championships in 2016 and a 3rd place finish at a 2017 Confederations Cup. Portugal were in a good place nationally regarding football and the World Cup would be an interesting challenge for Ronaldo and co. Their group features a fairly easy set of teams and Switzerland, who they actually beat 2-0 to finish top of the group on the last day of fixtures. A strong qualifying phase without Guedes however upon being called up he score twice in a 3-0 win over Algeria, showing a strong case that he should be starting in Russia.
Portugal are currently 3rd in the World Rankings and will looking to get out of their group of Spain, Morocco and Iran. Then the winners/runners up of that group will play the winner of Group A (Russia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Uruguay) which could prove tricky however a strong few games can swing momentum in anyone’s favour.
Performance in Qualifying
Gonçalo Guedes didn’t actually feature in qualifying! A fairly new to the scene player being only 21. He was the first 18 year old to get a nod for the national team since Ronaldo mind…
His strong season at Valencia on loan has clearly given the manager a change of heart and I’m sure he’ll perform well on the big stage.
Why He Is One To Watch
The reason I picked him as a OTW was because the 21 year old is full of confidence coming into the world cup and doesn’t need to prove anything so he can just enjoy his football. He is a great talent both physically and technically. He is definitely a play-maker and is always in and about the action. Wingers these days tend to float around the attacking end of the pitch and he will do that to confuse defenders. He’s got a great right foot and isn’t afraid to shoot from, well anywhere as you can see!
Video of Player/Compilation
In doing my research on the player, I’ve found an absolute cracker he scored recently and a highlights video which is a pretty decent overview of the player in general.
Here are his stats in game in 2022. He managed to sign for Bayern in 2019 (the summer after the World Cup) and went for a cool £94 million. He’s now playing regularly for one of the best clubs in the world in game and you can see why with those stats.
