All-Time New York Red Bulls XI – Henry, Dax, Mathis

Whilst watching back the highlights of New York Red Bulls versus Toronto FC, I thought, I wonder what the all time XI would be, so here is Dictate the Game’s New York Red Bulls All Time XI:

Goalkeeper: Tim Howard

The goalkeeper spot was between current ‘keeper Luis Robles and ex-Metro Tim Howard. Howard edged it due to the fact of his success in the Premier League. As a New Jersey native, Howard played 88 MLS games between the 1998 season and 2003 season. Howard departed half way through the 2003 MLS season, leaving for $4 million to Manchester United.

Defender: Jeff Parke

Jeff Parke played for the club for four years, and was part of the team that got the franchise closest to MLS Cup glory, he played 132 games, scoring one goal. Not bad for the last pick overall at the MLS Superdraft hey? Parke left the club after Seattle picked him in the expansion draft.

Defender: Jámison Olave

Jámison Olave played for New York Red Bulls for the 2013 and 2014 seasons, making 57 appearances and scoring 4 goals. He was part of the squad that won the first ever trophy in franchise history.

Defender: Eddie Pope

Again, picking the last defender was a choice between club legend Mike Petke, and Eddie Pope. After many minutes of thinking, I went for Eddie Pope. Pope joined the club from DC United in 2003 in exchange for Mike Petke, and made 42 appearances. Pope got 82 caps for the USMNT.

Left Midfielder: Thierry Henry

Although Henry played most of his time up front for the Red Bulls, I had to get him in this XI somewhere and due to a number of strikers over the years, it had to be LM for Henry. Thierry Henry joined the franchise as DP in 2011 and stayed until the 2014 season, and made 122 appearances and scored 51 goals for the franchise, the 3rd best in the history.

Central Midfielder: Roberto Donadoni

An original Metro finally makes it onto the XI, Donadoni was the centerpiece of the first ever MetroStars team, and made 49 appearances, scoring 6 goals and making it into the MLS XI of the Year.

Central Midfielder: Amado Guevara

Amado Guevara played for the franchise between 2003 and 2006, making 103 appearances and scoring 32 goals, before being traded to Chivas USA in 2007. He is currently RBNY’s 6th all time leading goalscorer.

Central Midfielder: Dax McCarty

This is the selection that some may argue shouldn’t be included. Dax played for the franchise right up until a few months ago when the club skipper was traded to Chicago for $400,000, which to this current day is the subject of mixed opinions from the Red Bulls fans. Dax played for the club between 2011 and 2016, playing in 198 appearances, becoming the franchise’s all time appearance holder, scoring 14 goals in the process. Nicknamed the Ginger Ninja during his time, Dax became captain during the 2015 season, and that is the main reason he goes into my team, for his leadership.

Right Midfielder: Clint Mathis

Mathis with his I Love NY shirt

Okay, okay, I may be clutching at straws on this one, but I had to get in Clint Mathis at some point, and considering towards the latter end of his career, he played in midfield a bit, I put him at right mid. Clint had two spells at the club, making 93 appearances and scoring 45 goals over the spells, and he is currently the 4th all time goalscorer, but did hold the title until Juan Pablo Angel and Bradley Wright Phillips came along.

Striker: Juan Pablo Angel

Juan Pablo Angel joined the franchise as our second DP in 2007, from Aston Villa, and went on to make 102 appearances and score 62 goals in all competitions, and held the all time goal record until Bradley Wright Phillips came to town in 2013 and score 82 goals, 20 more than Juan. There are no grudges though as Juan came to present the trophy to Bradley last year.

Striker: Bradley Wright-Phillips

Like you expected anything other than BWP here! Wright-Phillips joined the club halfway through 2013, winning the Shield in his first season, before scoring 27 goals in 2014 (tying a league record), winning the MLS Golden Boot, and after having an off-year in 2015, but still scoring 17 goals and winning a second Supporters Shield, BWP scored 23 goals in 2016 to win another Golden Boot, and is now RBNY’s all time top goalscorer with 82 goals in all competitions.
