Dictate the Game talks to Halstead town Player James Murray (Muzza) about non league football, the impact of the fans, could non league players do a job in the MLS and general football.

What’s the best thing about playing for a non league team?

The fact that most players and managers work full or part time to still play the game they love!

What’s your ambitions as a player – eg playing at a higher level or travelling the world playing in different cultures?

Hoping to play at a higher level with Halstead Town next season if we can get promoted! Fingers crossed!

What’s the hardest thing about play for a non league team?

Not having enough good referees!

What do you feel your greatest achievement has been as a player so far in your career?

Coming from Sunday league having a jolly up to competitive non league football

How do you feel the season has gone so far? (NB: This interview was done in mid September)

Very solid! The cup runs have been amazing (FA Cup). We’re taking each game as it comes and main focus is the league!

Trying to get the ball!

Who do you feel has been the best player at Halstead this season?

Very difficult to pick as you could pick 4 or 5 but I’ll go Joe Fowler (GK). He’s been unreal since joining! Masterclass performance in FA Cup and a top lad!

By the end of the season, what do you and Halstead want to have achieved?

Promotion

How do you think Non League can get more coverage and support?

More money from FA for more 4G pitches etc and better facilities

What is the best comeback match you have played in?

Stowmarket last year, we were 2-0 down with 10 men with the referee against us and we came back and won 3-2

How much of a role do the fans play to the club?

The fans are the heartbeat of the club! They have all worked so hard day in day out to sort out facilities and all the work behind the scenes! The players really appreciate it!

Muzza with the other players celebrating scoring in the FA Cup .

What’s your greatest achievement with Halstead so far?

This seasons FA Cup run! We have struggled in cup competitions over the years and we usually have the hard end of the draw. This year was also a very difficult draw but we overcame teams a league above and a team two leagues above us.

Halstead shocked everyone by getting to the First Qualifying Round of the FA Cup this season, what do you feel achieved this?

The team spirit we have is the best I have ever witnessed! We work hard for each other but we also have a very talented side who can play football

What have been the benefits of the clubs’ cup run this season to the club and yourself and the other players?

Beating higher sides has given us massive confidence! We haven’t played many league games due to cup runs but the atmosphere around the club has been brilliant so hopefully we will take this form into the league!

How did you get signed up by Halstead?

Lewis Cunliffe (Halstead legend) asked me to come training to see how it was! It all started from there!

Halstead were so close to promotion last season, but just missed out, do you feel the club can go one place better this season?
Yes

Favourite football team?

Arsenal

Favourite footballer ever?

Zidane

Favourite MLS team

New York Red Bulls

Bradley Wright Phillips, who never had a great career in England, is currently ripping the up the MLS, do you feel some non league players could do a job in the MLS?

1 million percent!  Look what Vardy did in the prem!

First team you ever played for?

Great Bradfords (that was when I could actually hit the net in them days)

One player from Halstead who could do it at a higher level?

Many of the boys I believe could play higher but I won’t name any names incase they leave!  😂

Do you want to say anything to the supporters?

Yet again we appreciate everything you do behind the scenes and all the support you give us on and off the pitch!
